Scoring

Paper-based Testing uses locally printed, plain paper student answer sheets. Each sheet lists the student, class and test names, and repeats that information in a barcode. This eliminates wasted student time and reduces errors.

Online Testing in ROS seamlessly integrates with paper-based testing, so that both forms may be administered in the same session. The teacher may start, pause, restart, and stop testing. Students may resume testing without any loss of accumulated responses. The simple student interface is similar to many states' online tests, but uses any standard web browser.

The ROS Scanning Station is composed of a Fujitsu sheet-fed optical scanner, and a network interface device. No client-supplied equipment is required, only ethernet and power connections. The scanner is available in two models, 15 and 20 pages per minute, both no bigger than a desktop printer. Operation is simple: users place 30-40 bubble sheets face down in the input hopper and press a button on the scanner. Each page is scanned and transmitted to ROSworks' servers, where it is scored. Continuous scanning is achieved by refilling the hopper while the scanner is running.

Advantages of the ROS approach:

  • Graphic scanners are affordable, even for small schools.
  • No need to maintain an inventory of preprinted forms.
  • Each form is pre-coded with student and test information.
  • No header or key sheets are needed.
  • Sheets for different classes and tests can be scanned in any order.
  • Setup and operation is extremely simple.
  • No additional computer is required to control the scanner.
  • Distributed scanning increases scoring speed.
  • Centralized scoring provides district-wide aggregation.
